Sovereign Construction has been working with the leading retail of Tesco stores limited for over 30 years, acting as a main/principle contractor for the organisation for project works, due to the success of previous projects. Sovereign Construction was selected to construct a new community centre facility within the grounds of a newly built Extra store in West Durrington
These works were required due to the proximity of the new store and the existing community centre and an agreement between Tesco Stores limited and the local authority to construct a new and modern facility with an increased floor area by approximately 50%. The community centre was designed by a local architectural practice, Michael Cook Associates and Structural Engineers Melliss CP. The design of the new community centre is modern in appearance combined with the functionality that is required by such a facility. It incorporates two large sports halls with the option to sub divide same together with smaller meeting rooms and communal areas, the sports halls being constructed in accordance with Sports England design criteria.
The structure is formed utilising a steel frame together in part with load bearing brick works, the external elevations area a mixture of face brickwork and pre-coloured stow render. It incorporates standard glazing and in part Reglit obscured, the roof design if of low pitch coloured zinc together with all associated rain water goods utilising the same materials.
"The new Community Centre” opened for general public use during the Summer of 2011 and is currently being used by members of the local community enjoying such diverse activities as indoor bowls, judo, bridge evenings, quizzes, etc.
Following the opening of the new Community Centre and vacation of the existing property demolition works have been undertaken together with amendment to the roadway system and infrastructure around the new Tesco Store – see separate case study.
Close liaison has been maintained during the entire project with the local authority and the community centre operators in order to ensure that all aspects of the end user are fully accommodated and to ensure that they remain involved with this exciting new facility.
